Just as with any other hardware purchase, choosing a HDMI Matrix Switch can be a complex decision based on factors such as display resolution, device proximity (sources and displays), and cost. When choosing whether to purchase a HDMI Video Matrix Switch it is critical to plan the entire installation. This often will include making conscious decisions about future expansion. The following list of questions will help guide the decision making process.
1. How many sources will be involved in the installation?
HDMI Matrix Routers are predominantly available in several basic configurations starting with 2 inputs and ranging to a total of 16 inputs. Determining both the initial and final number of sources is an important step as cost can quickly increase with the number of sources and the feature set that is needed.
2. How many output displays will be used?
Just like planning for the number of sources, planning for the number of displays will reduce future headaches. Most HDMI Matrix Switches have a maximum of 16 outputs. However, these matrix switches can be combined with regular splitters to increase the total number of outputs, but displays attached to the splitter will all be mirrored (showing the same image).
3.How far from the Matrix Switch will the displays be used?
Many matrix switches are used with displays and video sources that are located relatively near each other. However, it is not uncommon for displays to be located throughout a building, or across a large room. For installations with distances greater than 75 feet it is recommended that an HDMI Extender be used. (If Full HD resolution is necessary, an HDMI Extender should be used for any installation over 25 feet)
4.Would a HDMI Matrix Switch with an integrated Cat5 Extender be a better option?
For installations with multiple HDMI Extenders, it can be cost effective to upgrade from a HDMI Matrix Switch to one with an integrated HDMI Extender. Depending on the option, receivers can be purchased either as a complete kit, or on an as needed basis. This also allows for much less expensive network cables to be used for longer distances rather than long HDMI cables.
5.What is a HDBaseT HDMI Matrix Solution?
A HDBaseT HDMI Matrix Switch has an integrated HDMI Extender solution over Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat7 cable at distances up to 100m. HDBaseT includes 5 technologies rolled into 1 network cable. It supports uncompressed video and audio, 100Mbps Ethernet, power over cable, and device control through RS232/USB, CEC, and IR.
